We’ve all experienced that sudden moment of panic; when a new light flickers on your dashboard, and it could be a million and one things you have no idea about. Instead of opening Safari and Google searching, keep this article on hand the next time you come across a new light.
Here are the most important ones to look out for:
Brakes and Brake Fluid
Brakes are arguably the most important aspect of your car safety, so if you see this headlight come on, don’t hesitate to get it checked out by a pro.
Engine Warning Light
The engine light coming on typically means it’s a mixture of symptoms. It could be a lack of power, (which means the car has essentially gone into safety mode), a weird start in the accelerator as you press on the gas, or another fault. Either way, get it checked!
Airbag Light
This means a faulty airbag, which could blow up at any time or doesn’t work, either of which can cause injury. Get it checked as soon as you see this come on.
Power Steering Light
This light means something is wrong with your steering system. If the steering system is messed up, it’s going to feel like you’re using a lot of effort to steer, as the wheel is heavy. So if you need to make a sudden lane change, you’re in trouble! It’s more of a nuisance than anything, so get it checked out quickly.
DPF / Diesel Particulate Filter Light
This is a feature in your car that removes soot from exhaust gases to reduce emissions. This light coming on not only means you’re emitting toxins, but you could also be destroying your engine. If you wait too long, these replacements can get expensive, so don’t wait.
Coolant Warning Light
Coolant is super important because it keeps your engine from getting to hot and essentially welding together. This light means your coolant levels are running low. If your temperature gauge is also reading in the red, it’s most likely your engine overheating. Please don’t hesitate to check on this one.
Oil Warning Light
Oil is used to lubricate your engine, and the corresponding oil pump is used to spray the fluid all over the engine. If temperatures get too high, the level is low or oil pressure drops, the effectiveness of the lubrication will drop or it will leave all together. This is super expensive, so fix it asap.
Tire Pressure
Your tire pressure is low! Get your tires filled.
Battery Light
You could have a faulty alternator, faulty battery or damaged cabling. The alternator’s job is to charge the battery as it’s moving, so this can’t be good! Heads up, your battery goes out QUICK, so get it checked asap!
